The Golden Time of the Indian film industry commenced in the 1940s. The best films were produced in this decade until the 1960s. The motion pictures Pyaasa and Kaagaz ke Phool were a couple of the movies produced during the Golden Era.

In the 1950s, the Parallel Cinema movement commenced, led by the Bengalis. A number of the movies produced during this era were Neecha Nagar and Two Miles of Land.
